Peru is one of the twelve largest mineral-producer in the world and has abundant mineral resources reserves. The mining industry is a main pillar for Peru's national economy, and also a strong driving force for its economic growth. In recent years, the continuous increase in the number of social and environmental conflicts in the mining sector in Peru has not only led to a decline in mineral output and reduced financing in the mining sector, but also to a stagnant situation in the economic growth of mining extractivism. At the same time,China now is the second largest source of foreign direct investment in Peru's mining sector. Most of Chinese mining projects invested in Peru have suffered from protests from local communities. In this case,a systematic grasp of the complex social issues of mining conflicts will not only help to fully understand the possibility of establishment of sustainable mining development in Peru, but also offers Chinese enterprises some ideas and suggestions for sustainable investment in the mining industry in Peru. The paper has five parts. The first part is the introduction, which elaborates on the background and significance of the topic and the current research on mining conflicts in academic circles at home and abroad. The second mainly discusses the general situation of Peru's mineral resources, the history of mining development and its impacts on Peruvian economic and social development. The third mainly analyzes the definition of mining conflict, the participants and the current mining conflicts in Peru. The fourth part is the key chapter of this paper. The focus of its discussion mainly includes the following four aspects: 1)Through collecting and analyzing the database of mining conflicts in December 2019 as illustration, the common reasons for different mining conflicts are to be summarized;2)Taking the conflicts of the Río Blanc copper mine and the Las Bambas copper mine as examples, the author aims to analyze the specific reasons of Chinese mining companies facing mining conflicts in Peru;3)making a summary of the root causes of mining conflicts in Peru;4)Discussing the impacts of mining conflicts. The fifth part mainly discusses the mining conflicts management practices and suggestions for the Peruvian government and mining companies.
