From junior middle school onwards,as individuals enter adolescence,their body and mind will undergo drastic changes.Coupled with academic pressure and college entrance pressure,junior middle school students with fragile body and mind are prone to mental health problems.Self-esteem is one of the indicators of individual mental health,and individual mental health is closely related to self-esteem.Therefore,improving self-esteem level can be a feasible and effective strategy to improve the mental health level of junior middle school students.Moreover,the research shows that junior middle school is a critical period for the development of individual self-esteem,during which the intervention of junior middle school students’ self-esteem is twice the result with half the effort.As a new generation,the post-00 s deserve our attention and research on the status quo of their self-esteem and the characteristics of demography variables.But directly intervening in the self-esteem of junior high school students is difficult.As the most important interpersonal relationship of junior high school students,peer relationship has many positive functions such as improving individual mental health level,peer respect and acceptance will improve individual self-esteem level.It can be seen that peer relationship is closely related to self-esteem of junior high school students.Therefore,it is of great significance to explore the influence of peer relationship on junior high school students’ self-esteem and to intervene in junior high school students’ self-esteem.Using the revised version of two-dimensional Self-esteem Questionnaire and Adolescent Friendship Quality Test,1138 junior middle school students from a middle school in Huaibei City,Anhui Province were surveyed and analyzed by SPSS 23.0software.After understanding the status quo and relationship between peer relationship and self-esteem of junior high school students,40 subjects,half male and half female,were screened out and randomly assigned to the intervention group and the control group.The participants in the intervention group were given group counseling to improve peer relationship for 8 times,so as to explore the effect of group counseling to improve peer relationship on self-esteem of junior high school students.The conclusions are as follows:(1)The self-esteem of junior middle school students is at the level of medium and slightly above;The level of self-esteem in grade one was higher than that in grade three.The only junior middle school students have higher self-esteem than the non-only junior middle school students.The level of self-esteem of junior middle school students who are class cadres is higher than that of junior middle school students who are not class cadres.The self-esteem level of urban junior high school students is higher than that of rural junior high school students.The self-esteem level of junior middle school students whose father’s education level is high school or technical secondary school and undergraduate or junior college is higher than that of junior middle school students whose father’s education level is middle school.The junior middle school students whose mothers’ educational level is high school or technical secondary school and undergraduate or junior college students have higher self-esteem than those whose mothers’ educational level is primary school or below and junior middle school students.The gender difference of self-esteem of junior high school students is not obvious.(2)The overall status of peer relationship among junior high school students is good;The peer relationship of girls is better than that of boys;The peer relationship of grade one is better than grade two and grade three.The peer relationship of only children is better than that of non-only children;Junior middle school students who served as class cadres had better peer relationship than those who did not.Urban junior high school students have better peer relationship than rural junior high school students;Junior middle school students with higher educational level have better peer relationship than junior middle school students with lower educational level.(3)There is a significant positive correlation between peer relationship and self-esteem of junior middle school students;The explanation rate of peer relationship to total variation of self-esteem of junior high school students reached 42%.Peer relationship of junior high school students could predict their self-esteem level by regression equation.(4)Group guidance to improve peer relationship can significantly improve the quality of peer relationship and self-esteem of junior middle school students.
