The quality of postgraduate education is related to our country’s major development strategy and has attracted much attention in recent years, especially the issue of academic ability training for postgraduate students.Under the responsibility system for tutors to guide postgraduate students, the development of graduate students’ academic ability is closely related to the guidance of tutors. This research is devoted to exploring how “tutor-student interaction” affects the development of postgraduate students’ academic ability.Around this main problem, the following sub-problems were paid attention to in the research process.Firstly, how does the academic ability of postgraduate students develop? What are the factors that affect the development of their academic ability? How do these factors interact? Secondly, how does “tutor-student interaction” affect the development of postgraduate students’ academic ability? With the help of grounded theory, this research conducted interviews with 8 full-time postgraduate students from the case school.First, through theoretical sampling, this study interviewed 4 students. After conducting a three-level coding analysis on the interview data,7main categories and 1 core category were determined.According to the paradigm model of grounded theory, the logical relationship between the main categories is clarified. In addition,a theoretical model was constructed. Then,in order to test the theoretical saturation, this study interviewed 4 other students and performed a coding analysis on the data. The study found that the development process of postgraduate students’ academic ability is affected by multiple factors.Due to the differences in the academic interaction between tutors and postgraduate students, the academic development of them faces different situations.Based on the judgment of their own factors,as well as the influence of tutor factors and environmental factors, postgraduate students have adopted different strategies, resulting in diversified paths for the development of their academic ability, and different satisfactions and choices. The different situation arises because of the influence of individual factors of postgraduate students and tutors, and the impact of policy and institutional factors.Accordingly, this research puts forward suggestions to improve the academic ability of postgraduate students, hoping to provide benefits to the development of postgraduate education in our country.
