Research purpose:Using different exercise programs as interventions,we explored the effects of a sustained 12-week moderate-intensity exercise intervention on junior high school students’ self-efficacy,coping styles and subjective well-being,and the mediating effects of self-efficacy and coping styles on subjective well-being,so as to provide scientific guidance basis for physical exercise to improve junior high school students’ subjective well-being and theoretical support for the selection of physical education curriculum content. Methods:Using a convenience sampling method, three classes of 129 students in the second grade of a middle school in Jiangsu Province were selected for the study, and randomly divided into two experimental groups and one control group according to the teaching class, including 43 students in the basketball group(22 males and 21 females);42 students in the aerobics group(20 males and 22 females);and 44 students in the control group(22 males and 22 females). The different exercise program interventions lasted for 12 weeks and were conducted three times a week, with a cumulative intervention time of 30 minutes in each 40-minute physical education class and a moderate intervention intensity(heart rate of 124-140 beats per minute). The General Self-Efficacy Scale, the Coping Style Scale for Secondary School Students, and the Subjective Well-Being Scale for Adolescents were used, and were measured centrally before and after the experiment,respectively.Results:(1)Through the 12-week basketball and aerobics exercise intervention, junior high school students’ levels of self-efficacy,coping style and subjective well-being were significantly improved, with significant differences between the pre-test and post-test(P<0.001)and non-significant differences between the experimental groups(P>0.05).(2)Selfefficacy partially mediated the effect between basketball exercise intervention and subjective well-being,with a mediating effect of 36.4%.Self-efficacy fully mediated between the aerobics exercise intervention and subjective well-being,with a mediating effect of 55.0%.Positive coping partially mediated the relationship between the aerobics intervention and subjective well-being,with a mediating effect of 30.6%.(3)Self-efficacy and positive coping style partially mediated the effect of basketball exercise intervention on subjective well-being,with a chain mediating effect of 32.6%.Conclusions:(1)Both basketball and aerobics interventions could improve junior high school students’ self-efficacy,coping styles, and subjective well-being,but there were no significant differences in the effects between the programs.(2)Both basketball and aerobics interventions can directly affect subjective well-being levels, and both basketball and aerobics can indirectly affect subjective well-being levels by improving self-efficacy.(3)The aerobics intervention can indirectly improve subjective well-being by enhancing positive coping styles.(4)The basketball intervention could indirectly improve the subjective well-being of junior high school students by enhancing self-efficacy and positive coping. |
