In today’s culture, dissatisfaction with appearance is becoming a common problem in society.Women feel that it is better for them to be thinner, while men worry that they are not tall enough and their muscles are not enough either. On social media, trends like "waist like A4 paper","right-angled shoulders",and "collar bones put coins" have often attracted everyone to imitate. This phenomenon is also particularly prominent among high school students at a special age stage where their physical appearance changes drastically and their self-concepts are constantly developing. The selfie behavior in social networks as a way of showing oneself to others is becoming more and more popular nowadays. Many scholars’ studies have shown that there is a relationship between selfies and body image satisfaction. Therefore, based on the tripartite influence model and objectification theory, this study explores the mediating role of self-objectification between selfies and body image satisfaction,as well as the moderating role of appearance-contingent self-worth among high school students. This study uses a questionnaire survey method, using the selfie posting frequency, the selfie editing scale, the selfie viewing scale, the self-objectification questionnaire, the adolescent self-worth domain dependence scale, and the body image states scale as measurement tools, distributed questionnaires in the three grades of four high schools in Chengdu, and received 864 valid questionnaires. After processing the data, the following conclusions were drawn:(1)The selfie-related behaviors of high school students are affected by demographic variables such as student origin and gender.High school students in urban areas have significantly higher scores in the two dimensions of selfie posting and selfie editing than in rural areas; The levels of selfie behavior in the three dimensions of selfie posting, selfie editing, and selfie viewing are significantly higher than those of boys.(2)The body image satisfaction of high school students is affected by demographic variables such as origin and gender.High school students whose origin is urban have significantly higher body image satisfaction scores than those in rural areas;girls have significantly lower body image satisfaction levels than boys.(3)Among male high school students, selfie posting, selfie editing, and selfie viewing were all significantly positively correlated with the level of self-objectification.Selfie posting was significantly positively correlated with body image satisfaction, while selfie viewing were significantly positively correlated with self-objectification levels. Both selfie editing and selfie viewing were all not significantly correlated with the level of body image satisfaction.(4)Under the condition of controlling the three demographic variables of grade, major and origin in female high school students, selfie editing has an impact on individual body image satisfaction through the full mediating effect of self-objectification;while in the male group the mediation model does not hold.(5)Under the condition of controlling the three demographic variables of grade, major and origin in female high school students, selfie viewing has an impact on individual body image satisfaction through the partial mediation effect of self-objectification;while in the male group the mediation model does not hold.(6)In the group of female high school students,appearance-contingent self-worth can moderate the second half of the two mediating models of selfie editing-self objectification-body image satisfaction, and selfie viewing-self objectification-body image satisfaction. With the decrease of individual appearance-contingent self-worth,the predictive effect of selfobjectification on female high school students’ body image satisfaction gradually decreased.Based on the above research results, the following personal recommendations are given:Firstly,in mental health education,we should guide high school students to consciously improve their media literacy and break the shackles of self-objectification.Secondly,we should cultivate high school students to establish internal stable and diverse self-values.In addition, for the protection of adolescents’ body image, the mass media should assume their social public responsibility. Finally, each individual should strive to become a solid backing against toxic appearance values in the social support system.
