Abstract/Summary:
The saying goes,’When we save things and enjoy beautiful scenery,we cannot change things in an instant.’ Nowadays,China’s development is changing rapidly. The arrival of the big data era has shifted people’s main communication methods from offline to online, and social media has become the main platform for people to communicate.Social media sites are filled with labels such as "fairy ears","swan necks","eight pack abs",and "185" that label "high-quality women and men".This is not only an aesthetic anomaly in society, but also a shackle to the thinking of contemporary young people. The top beauties and handsome men that can be seen everywhere on social networks have also unconsciously led people to have the idea of ’which is more beautiful than Xu Gong’.This upward comparison of appearance makes individuals feel dissatisfied with their appearance, and even lead to psychological problems such as anxiety and depression. Therefore, this study is based on a socio-cultural model of physical satisfaction, and explores the impact of upward appearance comparison on appearance anxiety through one pre-experiment and two experiments,as well as the mediating role of physical satisfaction and the moderating role of self-affirmation in it.The preliminary experiment used 188 college students as subjects to initiate appearance comparison using the appearance comparison priming paradigm, and measured appearance anxiety using the simplified version of the Appearance Anxiety Scale. It explored whether upward appearance comparison increased appearance anxiety, and whether gender played a moderating role in it.Experiment 1 explores the psychological mechanism by which upward appearance comparison affects appearance anxiety.183 college students were selected as participants, and the appearance comparison priming paradigm was used to initiate appearance comparison.A simplified version of the Appearance Anxiety Scale was used to measure appearance anxiety and the Body Image State Scale was used to measure body satisfaction. The aim was to explore whether body satisfaction plays a mediating role in the relationship between upward appearance comparison and appearance anxiety,Whether gender regulates the upward appearance has a negative impact on the path of physical satisfaction.Experiment 2 used 166 college students as participants to initiate appearance comparison using the appearance comparison priming paradigm, the classic self-affirmation manipulation paradigm to manipulate self-affirmation,and the simplified version of the Appearance Anxiety Scale to measure appearance anxiety and the Body Image State Scale to measure body satisfaction. The aim was to explore the effects of self-affirmation manipulation on individual physical satisfaction after upward appearance comparison among college students Is there a difference in appearance anxiety.Through the above three experiments, this study draws the following conclusions:(1)There is a significant positive correlation between upward appearance comparison and appearance anxiety, that is,the appearance anxiety of the comparison group is significantly higher than that of the control group, and there is no gender difference in this process;(2)Physical satisfaction plays a mediating role in the relationship between upward appearance comparison and appearance anxiety, and there is no gender difference in the path where upward appearance comparison negatively affects physical satisfaction.(3)Self affirmation regulates the first half and main pathway of the mediating chain of upward appearance comparison, physical satisfaction, and appearance anxiety.Self affirmation can directly alleviate individuals’ appearance anxiety caused by upward appearance comparison, and can also alleviate appearance anxiety by improving physical satisfaction.
