In recent years,a number of surveys and studies show that the mental health status of primary and secondary school students in China is not optimistic,and mental health education has been paid more and more attention by education departments and schools at all levels.In 2012,the Ministry of Education issued the guiding outline for mental health education in primary and secondary schools,which puts forward a series of Guiding Opinions on the role,objectives,contents and requirements of mental health education in primary and secondary schools.However,in the process of comprehensive popularization and specific implementation of mental health education,there is a serious shortage of teachers of mental health education.The team of head teachers is huge and has great advantages in carrying out mental health education,so they can be used as part-time mental health teachers.In this study,320 high school head teachers from six high schools in Chaoyang District,Shantou City,Guangdong Province were selected by cluster sampling method.A questionnaire survey was conducted on the current situation of their implementation of mental health education.The survey data were statistically analyzed,and eight head teachers were interviewed in order to collect more detailed information.Finally,according to the results of the survey and interview,the following conclusions are drawn:First,senior high school head teachers’ cognition of mental health education is correct,and there is no difference in gender and educational background;Second,high school head teachers can take the initiative to bring mental health education into class management;Third,the ability of mental health education of high school head teachers is generally not high;Fourth,in the use of mental health education,the most effective way for high school head teachers is psychological counseling,followed by daily infiltration and theme class meeting,but the effect of theme class meeting is poor,because there are few activities organized;Fifthly,the reasons for the low effectiveness of the implementation of mental health education by high school head teachers include the lack of knowledge and practical experience of mental health education by head teachers,the low understanding of students’ status by head teachers,the inadequate implementation of mental health education by head teachers,and the school level factors of insufficient attention and support from schools.Finally,in view of the current situation of the implementation of mental health education for senior high school head teachers,this paper puts forward some countermeasures and suggestions to improve the work of mental health education for head teachers from their own level and school level.At the head teacher’s own level: improve their own mental health education theory literacy,actively carry out class mental health education practice activities,in-depth understanding of students,pay attention to create a harmonious class environment,unite teachers;School management level: scientifically adjust the workload of class teachers,strengthen the mental health education and training of class teachers,and carry out student activities to provide opportunities for class teachers to implement education.
