As the first driving force leading the development,innovation has increasingly become the main force to promote economic and social development.The most scarce resource for building an innovative country is innovative talents.As an important way for the country to train high-quality innovative talents,postgraduate education shoulders special responsibilities and missions.However,at present,our country’s graduate students still lag behind developed countries in terms of scientific research innovation.Therefore,it has become the focus of graduate education to effectively improve graduate students’ innovative behavior and meet the needs of social development.The graduate education in our country adopts the supervisor responsibility system,As the first responsible person of graduate training management,the supervisor is the most direct and comprehensive on the quality of graduate training.However,there are few domestic researches on how the mentor’s guidance style affects the innovative behavior of graduate students,which needs to be further explored.Therefore,this research draws on the research of paternalistic leadership style that fits the Chinese context,based on social exchange theory and ternary interaction theory,constructs a model of the relationship between tutors’ paternalistic guidance style and graduate students’ innovative behavior.Firstly,the model analyzes the direct influence of three dimensions of tutors’ paternalistic style(authoritarian,kindness and virtue-oriented)on graduate students’ innovative behavior.Secondly,it analyzes the mediating role of tutor-graduate exchange relationship in the relationship between tutors’ paternalistic guidance style and graduate students’ innovative behavior.Finally,the moderating effect of individual initiative is discussed.This research focuses on Xinjiang universities and uses random sampling to investigate 1012 postgraduates studying for master’s degree in universities.Use SPSS25.0 and AMOS23.0 software to conduct empirical analysis on the acquired data,and examine the overall status of innovative behavior of graduate students,the tutor’s paternalistic guidance style,the tutor-graduate exchange,and graduate students’ innovative behavior,as well as the practicality of model assumptions.The results are as follows:(1)gender,grade,discipline,undergraduate college,willingness to read a Ph.D.,mentor guidance scale,regular group meetings,tutor guidance frequency have significant differences in graduate students’ inovative behavior,tutor-graduate exchange relationship and individual initiative.(2)paternalistic guidance style has a significant impact on graduate students’ innovative behavior,the authoritarian guidance style has a negative effect on postgraduate innovation behaviors,while the tutor’s kindness and virtue-oriented guidance styles have a positive effect on postgraduate innovation behavior.(3)Mentor-graduate exchange partially mediates the influence of authoritarian mentor style on graduate students’ innovative behavior,and fully mediates the influence of kindness mentor style and virtuous mentor style on graduate students’ innovative behavior.(4)Personal initiative can regulate the influence of tutors’ paternal guidance style on graduate students’ innovative behavior.Finally,this research puts forward countermeasures and suggestions from the perspectives of the postgraduate administration department,supervisors and individual postgraduates.
