Altruistic behavior has attracted much attention because of its important value to individuals and society since it was proposed.Researchers began to do a lot of research on it.It is of great significance to explore the generation and influencing factors of altruistic behavior for the improvement of behavior. In recent years, with the continuous attention of psychologists to the field of self, researchers began to explore the relationship between self-construction and some behaviors(such as decision-making,interpersonal communication, etc.),the behavior concerned is very wide, altruistic behavior has become one of the hot spots of research, but there is little discussion on the internal mechanism of self-construction and altruistic behavior. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to explore the relationship and influence between self-construction and altruistic behavior, hoping to provide some new ideas for individuals with different types of self-construction to improve their altruistic behavior.Study 1 focuses on the relationship between the four study variables and explores whether two mediating variables play a mediating role in the path of the relationship. The first experiment used measures of self-construction,empathy,prosocial motivation, and altruistic behavior in 515 college students. It was found that there was a strong association between the four studied variables of self-construction,empathy,prosocial motivation, and altruistic behavior, and this association was positive. When self-construction,empathy,and prosocial motivation were entered into the regression analysis equation simultaneously, all three variables had a significant positive predictive effect on altruistic behavior. The test of mediating effects found a chain mediating role of empathy and prosocial motivation in the relationship between self-construction and altruistic behavior. To further explore the influence of different types of self-construction on altruistic behavior and the role that empathy and prosocial motivation play in this influence process.Study 2 used an experimental approach, using a combination of sentence paradigm and guidance paradigm to initiate either of the subjects’ self-construction types separately, and then measured and compared individuals students’ characteristics of empathy, prosocial motivation, and altruistic behavior. The results of the study are as follows.(1)There are differences between the two types in terms of the direction and effect of the influence of altruistic behavior.(2)Empathy and prosocial motivation play a chain mediating role in the influence of the dependent self-construction on altruistic behavior.Individuals with dependent self-construal have higher levels of empathy and prosocial motivation and are more likely to produce altruistic behavior.(3)Empathy and prosocial motivation play a chain mediating role in the influence of the independent self-construction on altruistic behavior.Individuals with independent self-construction have lower levels of empathy and prosocial motivation and less altruistic behavior. In general, there is a close relationship between self-construction and college students’ altruistic behavior.Different types of self-construction can influence altruistic behavior through the chain mediating effect of empathy and prosocial motivation.
