Abstract/Summary:
Impression updating is a new research direction in the field of social cognition in the past ten years. It refers to the change of the impression that individuals make to others based on their contradictory behaviors in daily life.It is an important social cognitive ability and also affects social communication key factors. Most current researches start from the perspective of the stereotype content model, and discuss the influence factors of impression updating through the warmth dimension and ability dimension. Some studies have begun to pay attention to the influence of the moral and social dimensions under the warmth dimension on impression updating.Studies have shown that the moral dimension is an influencing factor for impression updating. This study further divides the moral dimension into moral behavior and unethical behavior, and explores the impact of unethical behavior on the updating of impressions.Experiment 1 uses 2(target individual behavior: moral behavior, ability behavior)× 2(behavior valence: positive,negative)in-subject experimental design to explore the impact of moral behavior on children’s first impression and children’s behaviors of different target individuals information clue judgment, the results show that the main effect of behavior valence on children’s first impression score is significant, and the first impression score of positive behavior valence is significantly higher than the first impression score of negative behavior valence. The interaction between target individual behavior and behavior valence is significant. The first impression score of negative ability behavior is significantly higher than the first impression score of unethical behavior, and the moral dimension score is significantly higher than the ability dimension score. At the same time, the main effect of behavioral valence on the behavioral information cues of the target individual is significant. The information-cueness score of positive behavior valence is significantly higher than that of negative behavioral valence. The target individual’s behavior and behavioral valence are significantly higher. The interaction effect is significant, and the clue score of moral behavior information is significantly higher than the clue score of ability behavior information. In Experiment 2,on the basis of Experiment 1,the second behavior that triggers impression updating was added, that is,whether the impression updating was affected by moral behavior, and 3(behavior under the dimension of target individual’s impression update: moral behavior, ability behavior, social behavior)× 2(behavior valence: positive,negative).In-subject experiment design, through comparing moral behavior and unethical behavior, further explore the impact of moral behavior on the updating of impressions, the results show : The main effect of behavior valence on impression updating is significant, and the behavior scores of positive behavior valence of subjects are significantly higher than the scores of negative behavior valence. The interaction between the second behavior and behavior valence is significant, and the impression update score of the second behavior is ethical behavior is significantly higher than the impression update score of the second behavior is unethical behavior.By comparing the influence of moral behavior and unethical behavior on impression updating under the moral dimension, this research shows that unethical behavior is the main influence factor of impression renewal, which enriches the theoretical research of impression renewal. This research also enlightens us to pay more attention to our own moral behavior and provide a good social environment for children’s psychological development, which is of great significance to children’s social interactions. However, this study still has some shortcomings, such as the lack of further discussion on implicit impressions.
