| Since the expansion of higher education and increasing enrollment of higher vocational colleges, the number of students entering secondary vocational schools has been rising. At the same time, the expansion of enrollment has given the secondary vocational students the opportunity to choose the path of general vocational diversion again, which has aroused the concern of the academic circles over the higher education expectations of secondary vocational students.Based on this, this research starts with the question of whether current secondary vocational students are willing to enter a higher education and whether they want to choose a vocational path or an academic path, discusses the status quo and influencing factors of the higher education expectations of secondary vocational students, and deeply explores the reasons for the diversion of education expectation and the system plan to alleviate the loss of outstanding professional talents. This research takes the secondary vocational students group in Shanghai as an example, and uses mixed-methods to investigate and analyze the higher education expectations of the secondary vocational students. The results show that: first, secondary vocational students have strong expectations for higher education, and undergraduate degrees are the most desirable academic qualifications for most of them.At the same time, the proportion of secondary vocational students who hope to obtain a graduate degree accounts for nearly a quarter.Second, the family cultural capital of secondary vocational students is relatively weak, but cultural capital has a significant impact on their higher education expectations.Third, students with different types of secondary vocational schools and funding methods are highly heterogeneous in higher education expectations.Vocational high schools and technical secondary schools have significantly higher expectations for higher education than technical schools.Higher education expectations of secondary vocational students in public schools are significantly higher than those in other types of subsidized schools.Fourth, after controlling for the relevant variables, the higher vocational enrollment policy has a significant impact on the higher education expectations of secondary vocational students. The more they understand the policy, the higher expectations for higher education they will have.Fifth, public opinion has an important influence on the selection of secondary vocational students to enter general occupations.Sixth, the top students prefer upgrading from junior college to undergraduate institute, the proportion of children who move with them is large, and the restrictions on the household registration of entering schools strengthen the expectations of higher education.Seventh, the certificate system needs to have social recognition, bringing a certain economic return according to certificate level.Based on the above research conclusions, suggestions have been proposed from the aspects of government, colleges and individuals: the government should promote the correct concept of talents, establish a general vocational interchange, and promote the implementation of the 1+X certificate system;colleges and universities should explore high-level apprenticeships, establish comprehensive high school and provide an information platform for entering higher education to ensure the qualifications for undergraduate entrance exams for children who move with them;individuals should clarify their personal learning plans, improve their ability to acquire information, enhance self-confidence,and form good psychological qualities. |
