The Impact Of Construal Level And Self-control On Malicious Envy Of College Students

In recent years,the things that college students envy and hurt others frequently occur,which has caused a very serious impact on the society.Envy is an unpleasant experience generated when an individual finds that others have the ability or goods he desires in the process of upward social comparison.Studies have found that there are two types of envy:benign envy and malicious envy.People who generate benign envy will reduce the gap with others by promoting themselves,so they will do a lot of friendly behavior.People who produce malicious envy will reduce the gap with others by belittling others,so they will do a lot of destructive behavior.Malicious envy often brings a series of negative effects.Therefore,it is very important to explore the inducing factors of malicious envy.Some researchers believe that self-control affects the degree of envy but not the type of jealousy,the higher the self-control,the lower the degree of envy.Some researchers believe that self-control affects the type of envy but does not affect the degree of envy,high self-control leads to benign envy and low self-control leads to malicious envy.Therefore,this study will continue to explore the relationship between self-control and envy.According to the CLT,people primed with global perception will have stronger self-control than those primed with local perception.Therefore,construal level(CLT)may be an important factor influencing the malicious envy of college students.This study includes a preliminary Experiment and two Formal Experiments:Preliminary Experiment provided a test of the validity of experimental manipulation.The purpose of this experiment is to let the subjects evaluate the possibility of student A’s(who is a fictitious dominant individuality)real existence and whether student A is similar to the subjects,and the effectiveness of the Stroop task.The results of this experiment showed that compared with the low similarity condition,the subjects under the high similarity condition think that the degree of existence of student A is higher,and they are more similar to student A.Compared with the low ego depletion condition,the subjects in the high ego depletion condition think that the degree of ego depletion is higher.This shows that the matching task is effective in the Preliminary Experiment.Experiment 1 explored the relationship between self-control and envy.The results of this experiment show that the participants with high self-control had a lower degree of envy and benign envy,while the participants with low self-control had a higher degree of envy and malicious envy.This shows that low self-control is an important factor of malicious envy.Experiment 2 explored the effect of CLT on the type of envy of college Students.The results showed that in the high ego depletion condition,the subjects in the local perception group and the control group had malicious envy,the subjects in the global perception group had benign envy.This shows that CLT can affect the type of envy of college students.
