Graduate education is one of the important forms of cultivating high-level and high-quality talents in China. The level of scientific research ability directly affects academic level of students, quality of universities, and development of the country. It is an extensive way to cultivate graduate students’ scientific research ability by project participation. Therefore,it is particularly necessary to explore the specific context and practical effects of project-based learning on the improvement of research ability of graduate students. The phenomenon that graduate students participate in the scientific research projects hosted by their supervisors to improve their scientific research ability is where this research starts from.By combing the relevant literature, the core issue is finally described as: What research capabilities have graduate students improved through project-based learning? Based on this, the study first defines connotation and characteristics of project-based learning, and discusses the theoretical basis of project-based learning’s role in graduate students’ scientific research ability building. Then, with the help of qualitative research methods, the researcher interviewed 33 graduate students to gain an in-depth understanding of the specific process and situation of graduate students in project-based learning, and repeatedly asked about the specific form of project-based learning at the graduate level, and finally borrowed the first-level coding of grounded theory to present an inductive analysis of the interview material. The study shows that project-based learning is an effective way to improve scientific research ability of graduate students, which is conducive to the improvement of scientific research professional ability, scientific research cooperation ability, independent scientific research ability, and scientific research practical ability of graduate students.However,project-based learning does not necessarily lead to the improvement of graduate students’ scientific research capabilities. To promote the scientific research ability of graduate students by project-based learning,we need to follow three principles of initiative, matching and sustainability. At the same time,we should pay attention to the four main factors that affect the effect of project-based learning: condition of the project, guidance of the tutor, state of students’ themselves and team structure.Based on principles and influencing factors above, the study finally proposes four optimization strategies of improving the scientific research ability of graduate students based on project-based learning as follows: establish project files to keep information transparent;form caring relationship between tutors and postgraduates as the foundation in project-based learning;clear purpose of their participation in the project and correct inappropriate attitude for students themselves;adopt distributed leadership to enhance team cohesion. This paper is divided into five parts: The first part is the introduction, which introduces research questions, relevant documents, research purpose, research significance and intended innovation. The second part discusses connotation of related concepts and theoretical basis. The third part presents design and implementation of this research from the aspects of research ideas, research methods, and research processes. The fourth part mainly reveals the four specific forms of project-based learning and the factors that affect the effect of project-based learning. The fifth part introduces conclusion and strategy, and briefly introduces the limitations and prospects of this study.
