| The traditional deliberative democracy theory is difficult to respond to the practical dilemma in the modern pluralistic society due to its excessively normative presupposition, which has led to a lot of doubts and criticisms. When the ideal of deliberative democracy was generally doubted,James Bohman began to think about the nature of deliberative democracy and how to effectively perform the function of deliberation.Bohman believes that public deliberation emphasizes the rational exchange of citizens, rather than manipulation, deception, and oppression. In the context of multiculturalism,in order to meet the feasibility requirements,Bohman revised some of the normative presuppositions of early deliberative democracy theory, and responded positively to a series of challenges to deliberative democracy theory posed by the multiculturalism, complex and unequal social reality. He connected the ideal of deliberative democracy with social reality, and then defended the realistic feasibility of the ideal of deliberative democracy from a theoretical level. From the perspective of the development process of the western deliberative democracy theory,Bohman not only played a role as a link between the past and the next, but also guided the future development direction of the deliberative democracy theory. His balance of normative and feasible negotiation is more worthy of reference by later scholars. In view of Bohman’s contribution, this article hopes to make a comprehensive review of his theory to get a glimpse of his theory and make an objective evaluation of his theory. This paper clarifies the theoretical framework of Bohman by studying his theoretical works, and studies his contribution to the development of Western deliberative democracy theory through comparative analysis. This article mainly examines and discusses the content of the following five parts: First, analyze the research background of James Bohman, clarify the development context of Bohman’s previous Western deliberative democracy theory, trace its origin and later development, and summarize the Western deliberative democracy theory The social challenges and theoretical doubts they are facing, reveal the inevitability of the emergence of Bowman’s theory;secondly, explain the framework of Bohman’s theory of pluralistic deliberative democracy, define key concepts, and analyze its public deliberation process and system conception.Third, follow Bohman’s theoretical logic and further study its theoretical core through his response to the practical dilemma of deliberative democracy, demonstrate the feasibility of Bohman’s theory through case study;fourth, explore Bohman’s contribution to the development of Western deliberative democracy theory and explore its theory through comparative analysis innovative achievements in public rationality and political equality, and reveal the guiding role of Bohman for later deliberative democracy theorists;fifth, point out that although Bohman’s theory has its unique value, there are always limitations: the theory is not fully explained, but also conflicts with capitalist society. |
