The epidemic of pneumonia infected by New Coronavirus in 2020 has become an international emergency event judged by WHO,causing widespread reports in the international media. It also makes China’s international discourse environment and national image face severe challenges.China’s performance in China’s novel coronavirus pneumonia has been praised by WHO for many times. This should be an opportunity for China to enhance its image. However, with the development of the world epidemic, the western media’s opinion about China is showing a more negative trend.According to this phenomenon, this study attempts to make a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the New York Times,a representative of the mainstream media in the United States, mainly through content analysis. What are the characteristics of China’s national image in the New York Times’ China related epidemic reports? What factors influence the New York Times’ s portrayal of China’s national image in emergency reports? What kind of discourse strategy does the New York Times use to build China’s image in China related epidemic reports? What are the implications of the findings for the construction of China’s national image? This series of questions to answer.Through the research, the author summarizes the theoretical model of the construction mechanism of China’s national image by foreign media in emergency reports within the paradigm of media construction theory of national image, and finds that China’s national image is based on the fact of emergency, and is influenced by the ideological prototype of Orientalism, the dynamic evolution of geopolitics, the interest needs of political parties, and the emergency The “four T” principles of foreign media’s discourse strategy are: tell your own talk;tell it selectively;tell it as often as possible;tell it as objective Finally, the emergency news report is made to form the national image of China received by the external public.
