The Image Of American Constructed By Global Times’ Weibo During The Covid-19

The new crown pneumonia epidemic has not only greatly impacted the development of the world economy,but its more far-reaching impact on the pattern of national relations is also constantly showing.The public opinion war between China and the United States under the controversy over the origin of the virus has also intensified.During the Covid-19,how did the mainstream Chinese media report on the United States,and what kind of American national image has it constructed? As the vanguard of my country’s international communication front,"Global Times" has become the best research sample.Therefore,this article selects the official Weibo of the Global Times as the research object,using a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods,starting from January 20,2020,and ending on April 20,2020.It has been sorted out within 3months.In the content of 346 US-related reports on @Global Times,and through text analysis of selected samples,this article try to analysis @Global Times reported strategy for the United States during the epidemic from the dimensions of US sentiment,report topics,report genres,presentation methods,and countries involved in the report.On this basis,this article analyzes the image of the United States constructed by @Global Times from six dimensions:In terms of epidemic prevention and control,the United States is seen as a country where anti-intellectualism prevails and the virus is out of control;in international relations,the United States plays a dual role as a disruptor of international order and a shirk of international responsibility;In terms of attitudes toward China,the United States presents an image of contradictory attitudes toward China in the early and late stages of the epidemic,and split between the government and society;in terms of social problems,friction within American society has become increasingly serious,populist thoughts are surging,and white people are supreme.The resurgence of ism has led to frequent occurrences of racial discrimination;On the economic front,the United States has been severely affected by the impact of the new crown pneumonia epidemic and government decision-making errors,and the economy is becoming increasingly sluggish;on the military front,the United States maintains its previous image and provoked war everywhere as a "world policeman.In order to further explore the way the @Global Times reported on the United States during the epidemic and the reasons for the image of the United States,the author combined news production and social control theory related knowledge,from news facts,the comparison of power between China and the United States,and national interest stance,further analyzed the influencing factors of the "Global Times" reporting style in the United States.At the end of the article,the author summarized the main results of this research and made an outlook on the practice of @Global Times participating in the construction of the mainstream public opinion structure of internal and external publicity linkage in the new era.
