| Higher education is a reflection of a nation’s scientific and technological advancements as well as its comprehensive national power. To enhance the depth of its higher education content,China has been introducing a range of superior foreign educational resources.Simultaneously,it is imperative to explore the translation of textbooks to progressively improve the quality of its translation, thereby fostering more effective development within the higher education sector. In this case, excerpts from the mathematics textbook Applied Multivariate Methods for Data Analysis are selected in this translation practice. This translation practice takes guidance from the theories of communicative and semantic translation proposed by British translation theorist,Peter Newmark.Communicative translation emphasizes that translators should eliminate the hurdles of reading for readers of the target language. While the essence of semantic translation lies in the preservation of the original author’s thoughts and the manifestation of the culture and characteristics unique to the source language. The translator meticulously analyzes the material at the lexical, syntactic, and textual levels.Through the practice of translation,at the lexical level,it is found that the technical term with the given meaning should be literally translated in accordance with semantic translation.However,semi-technical terms, which possess varying meanings across different fields, require a communicative translation approach to ensure readers of the target language can accurately grasp the specific intent of such terms.Syntactically, the translator takes nominalized structures, the passive voice, and long and complex sentences as research objects, and deals with them by transforming the part of speech, splitting the sentences, and rearranging the order of the sentences. At the contextual level, the translator chooses to scrutinize the cohesion and coherence of the discourse through techniques such as referential markers and conjunctions.By examining the specific challenges in E-C translation through case studies, this report strives to analyze and summarize the methodologies and strategies employed in textbook translation. We hope this translation practice might serve as a reference for future textbook translation endeavors, thereby contributing to the construction textbooks in higher education. |
