| Reading plays an important role in senior English teaching.Having a good reading ability can not only help students get good grades in exams, but can also be a plus in future jobs. With the 2017 edition of the new high school English curriculum standards to develop students’ core literacy,English reading learning has been given more profound significance. It also shows that the reading literacy of the students deserves the attention of every English teacher.Teachers should take the cultivation of students’ reading literacy as the ultimate goal, and pay attention to the cultivation of students’ reading character in this process, which includes helping students to form good reading habits and reading experiences, and on this basis to develop student’s reading ability, thus forms the benign cycle. However,in the actual reading teaching, teachers often use the traditional teaching methods to explain the text stiffly, students can’t participate in the class actively, and it lacks the cultivation of reading habits and reading experiences for students. In response to this phenomenon, the author proposes the“reading circles” teaching model. This model divides students into groups to study articles, and through autonomous and cooperative learning, their understanding of the text can be promoted, their reading experiences can be improved, and good reading habits can be formed, and so that they can improve their reading character. This thesis introduces the definition of “reading circles” model and reading character, and introduces the theoretical basis of “reading circles” model in detail, including input hypothesis theory, constructivism theory and cooperative learning theory. After reading a lot of relevant literature about the teaching of “reading circles” and reading character, the author has carried out an applied research on cultivating reading character of high school students through the “reading circles” model, the purpose of this study is to answer the following questions:(1)What effect does the “reading circles” model have on senior high school students’ reading habits?(2)What effect does the “reading circles” model have on senior high school students’ reading experiences?(3)What effect does the “reading circles” model have on senior high school students’ reading performance? The author makes an empirical study on the teaching model of “reading circles”,and selected two parallel classes in first grade in Lvshun No.3 Senior High School as the experimental group and the control group respectively.Firstly, questionnaires were distributed to learn about the current state of reading character of students in the two classes. And after the experiment, through the same questionnaire survey again to analyze students’ reading character whether to have the change. The results showed that the reading character of the experimental group was improved, especially in reading behavior and reading interest.Secondly,by comparing the results of the two groups before and after the experiment,it’s found that the teaching of “reading circles” can improve students’ reading performance to a certain extent. At last, the research finds that the teaching of “reading circles” can arouse student’ interest in reading and they take a positive attitude towards this teaching model. However, there are still some problems in this teaching model, such as the model takes much time and some students’ insufficient participation enthusiasm, and it’s difficult to keep order in class. To sum up,it’s feasible and effective to implement “reading circles” teaching model in senior English reading class, and to a certain extent,it can cultivate students’ reading character and develop good reading habits and reading experiences, and hereby improve students’ reading performance. |
