Vocabulary teaching is an important part of English teaching in junior high school and it is also the base and core of English language learning.However,in the actual vocabulary teaching in junior high school,teachers often adopt the traditional vocabulary teaching model,students learn words by rote,their understanding of the meaning of words is not comprehensive enough,and their vocabulary learning efficiency is low,affecting students’ listening,speaking,reading,writing and other English skills.How to effectively improve English vocabulary teaching and help students to expand their vocabulary is a problem that many junior English teachers are worrying about.This paper applies prototype theory to English vocabulary teaching in junior high school,and discusses the influence of prototype theory on English vocabulary learning of junior high school students.This study attempts to answer the following three questions:What is the effect of English vocabulary teaching based on prototype category theory on junior high school students’ interest in vocabulary learning?What is the effect of English vocabulary teaching based on prototype category theory on junior high school students’ strategies in vocabulary learning?What is the effect of English vocabulary teaching based on prototype category theory on of junior high school students’ accuracy in vocabulary use?The author conducted a 16-week teaching experiment in 100 students of Grade 8 in a junior high school in Panjin City.There were 50 students in the control class and 50 students in the experimental class.Before the teaching experiment,the two classes had comparable English vocabulary levels,and the control class used the traditional classroom teaching model while the experimental class used the teaching model of prototypical category theory.Questionnaires,pre-and post-tests and interviews were used as research tools in this study.As the result,the study found that the experiential teaching mode had a positive impact on the prototype theory of junior high school students.The basic-level vocabulary priority teaching method and prototype vocabulary learning method are obviously better than the traditional mechanical vocabulary memorization teaching method.The students in the experimental class are more interested in English learning than those in the control class,and they can use vocabulary more accurately.
