In recent years,Australian literature studies and translations have been active in China,and Australian literature classics have been the focus of translators’ attention.The publication of these classics of Australian literature has been a huge boost to Chinese readers’ understanding of the history,culture,local conditions and customs of foreign countries.This English-Chinese translation report takes chapters 8 to 13 of the literary work The Freedom Circus as the translation material.The source text is written by an Australia writer Sue Smethurst and it belongs to the biographical literature.It is translated independently by the translator,with a total of 20,898 words.There exists many proper words,culture-loaded words,complex and long sentences,and great cultural differences.In the process of translation,the translator finds some difficulties and adopts appropriate translation methods.This translation report presents the introduction of the background of the translation practice,significance of the translation practice,structure of translation report and the translation process description,and it puts great emphasis on analyzing difficulties during the translation process and corresponding translation techniques when tackling these difficulties at lexical level and syntactic level.At lexical level,literal translation with notes is used to translate culture-loaded words to help readers to understand the source text well.In translation of some rare proper nouns,both transliteration and annotation are adopted.The technique of meaning choice and extension is applied to deal with the translation of polysemous words.And usage of Chinese four-character idioms to translate character and environment description in the source text.At syntactic level,translation difficulties mainly fall on the translation of passive sentences,negative sentences,complex sentences and long sentences.Complex sentences and long sentences are major challenges for the translator,division is a translation technique that is used to deal with complex sentences,so as to cater for the reading habit of the target readers.Another translation method is turning phrases into clauses,and this technique is used to long sentences translation.Moreover,transformation of passive sentences and negation for dealing with negative sentences are the most common techniques in the translation process.In order to achieve ideal translation,the translator usually needs to combine several translation methods in translating these sentences.Through this translation practice and report writing process,the translator realizes the importance of the Australian literary works translation,and has a certain understanding of the relevant translation methods and techniques.As the source text contains a large number of cultural features and historical background,the translator should have a certain understanding of the cultural background behind it,and follow the expression habits of the target language in the translation process,so as to clearly and accurately convey the information of the source text to the target readers.
