This is a practice report on English-Chinese translation. The source text is an excerpt from The Freedom Circus by Australian writer Sue Smethurst, which belongs to the genre of biographical literature. The translator selects chapters 21-27 of the book as material for translation and analysis, which focuses on the story of a Jewish family that survives the Holocaust during the World War II and undergoes a series of separations and torments before finally starting a new life in Australia. There are about 11,000 characters in the source text and about 22,100 characters in the translated text. The translator summarizes the challenges faced during the translation process, exploring the corresponding translation techniques, and striving to accurately deliver the original information to the target readers. As a literary biography, the language of source text is smooth, logical and flexible. The story plot is complete, the character images are vivid, and there are a lot of communicative dialogues. The book has no Chinese version yet.In this translation practice report, the translator combines the characteristics of literary texts, systematically analyzes the translation difficulties encountered in the translation process from the lexical, syntactic and textual level and introduces corresponding translation techniques.Case analysis is the core content of this practice report. At the lexical level, the translator adopts three translation techniques including conversion, word meaning extension, and four-character phrase to make the translated words appropriate and accurately reflect the original meaning; At the syntactic level, for sentences with passive voice, long sentences, complex sentences, and character dialogues that appear in the text, the translator adopts voice shift, following the original syntactic order, reorganizing the sentence structure, and proper modal particles as well as punctuation to make the translation fluent, understandable and in line with Chinese expression habits; At the textual level, the translator explores the ways to realize the cohesion and coherence of the translation including omitting or adding conjunctions, specifying referential pronouns and supplementing information.Translation is both a process of information transmission and reception. Therefore,in the process of translation, the translator explores the details of the original text in a profound way to grasp the ideological connotation and emotional appeal that the author of the original text wants to expresses.Combining the style and the storyline of the work, the translator strives to retain the literary and documentary characters of the biographical literature,in order to achieve the maximum equivalence between the original text and the translation.
