The source text of this translation project is eight picturebooks from Picturebook Series of China’s Intangible Cultural Heritage.On the theme of China’s Intangible Cultural Heritage,the source text presents the invaluable cultural treasure with vivid and creative words and illustrations.The picturebook is often viewed as a combination of the verbal and the visual.However,since it is often performed or read out loud by parents or children,the aural is also an essential dimension.Neglecting the aural can compromise the aloud-readability of the picturebook translation.In this report,from the perspective of multimodal discourse analysis,the picturebook is viewed as a multimodal text that has language mode,image mode,typography mode and a hidden sound mode(which produces sound effects).Analytical frameworks developed by Painter et al.(2012)and van Leeuwen(1999,2006)are adopted to analyze image mode,typography mode and sound effects in the picturebook.This report mainly discusses the translation strategies for three groups of sound effects,and their corresponding influences on aloud-readability.The major findings are as follows:The aloud-readability has three layers: authenticity,motivation and unity.Three groups of sound effects can be positioned as “Figure”,“Field” and “Ground”,and they respectively influence the three layers of aloud-readability mentioned above.When sound effects are positioned as Figure,their features dominate the arrangement of other modes for the realization of authenticity.When sound effects are positioned as Ground,their features assist the arrangement of other modes in diversified ways to improve motivation.When sound effects are positioned as Field,their features coordinate with other modes in the whole picturebook so that unity could be fulfilled.Authenticity,motivation and unity are integrated and enhance each other to deliver better aloudreadability of picturebook translation.
