Polychrome pottery is a special kind of pottery that first fired the body and then painted the pattern.It is also one of the most common funerary objects in Jin-Tang tombs in the Eastern Tianshan Area,mainly consisting of bowls,pots,basins and other utensils.It has become a typical representative of the Jin-Tang cultures in the Eastern Tianshan Area due to the large number and variety of excavations.The polychrome pottery in the Eastern Tianshan Area originated from the period of Gaochang County of the Sixteen Kingdoms,developed in the Qu Shi gaochang and Xizhou Early-Tang Dynasty,and gradually disappeared with the popularity of Tang culture.This paper collected the materials of polychrome pottery unearthed from Jin-Tang tombs in the Eastern Tianshan Area,combined with the field investigation,analyzed and studied the collected polychrome pottery by archeological typology,and divided it into stages according to the popularity of polychrome pottery in the society at that time.The decorative patterns of polychrome pottery in the Jin-Tang period in the Eastern Tianshan Area mainly include lotus pattern,dot pattern,circle pattern,water ripple and chord pattern,etc.The mainstream patterns in different historical periods are different.Through the statistics and sorting of the polychrome pottery in the Jin-Tang period in the Eastern Tianshan Area,we can reflect the social pop culture differences in the Eastern Tianshan Area during the Period of Gaochang County,Gaochang Kingdom and Tang Xizhou periods.The comparative study of pottery assemblages excavated from tombs in the Hexi area can be seen that the Eastern Tianshan Area inherits and innovates the Hexi area.Based on the discussion of the shape,pattern and combination of pottery,it is concluded that the polychrome pottery of Jin-Tang period in the Eastern Tianshan Area was also influenced by the Han tradition in Hexi area,the culture of northern nomads,the social politics and belief factors at that time.Polychrome pottery from the Jin-Tang period is a omprehensive reflection of the social life and funeral concept of the residents in the Eastern Tianshan Area.The main innovations of this paper is embodied in three aspects: First,on the basis of fully grasping the archaeological reports and briefings of the Jin-Tang tombs in the Eastern Tianshan Area,the author systematically sorted out and studied the polychrome pottery unearthed from Jin-Tang tombs in the Eastern Tianshan Area;Second,through typological analysis,the development and evolution of the polychrome pottery in the Jin-Tang period in the Eastern Tianshan Area were sorted out,the types and characteristics of the decorative patterns in the region were extracted;Third,a comparative study of polychrome pottery in other regions reveals the social life and spiritual outlook of residents in the Eastern Tianshan Area during the Jin and Tang dynasties.
