| This is a report on English-Chinese translation.This report is produced based on the English-Chinese translation of the latest work Tin Camp Road written by an American author Ellen Airgood.This novel tells the story of a hardy single mother both physically and mentally who overcomes hardships with her daughter to gain a foothold,culminating in leading a happy and warm life.The translator selects Chapters One to Six of the original text to translate,which incorporates a wide range of detailed descriptions by depicting trivial things that the mother does for her daughter and episodes of their routine life in a moving manner.Hopefully,this translation can offer readers a window into this wonderful work and they can feel the strength of tenacity,love and hope radiated from the mother and her daughter in the face of the odds.This report describes the difficulties at the lexical and syntactic levels faced in the process of translation and reasonable translation techniques employed in responding to difficulties mentioned above.The lexical difficulties include semantic difficulties and difficulties in parts of speech;the syntactic difficulties include difficulties in attributive clauses and in other long sentences.Then,the translator focuses on the translation techniques adopted to address difficulties at the lexical and syntactic levels.At the lexical level,the translator adopts translation techniques of semantic extension,substitution,amplification and conversion of parts of speech.At the syntactic level,the translator adopts translation techniques of combination and division,turning phrases into clauses and restructuring sentence.Through this translation practice,the translator has learned to adopt multiple translation techniques and choose reasonable techniques in responding to different difficulties,which leaves the translation be more consistent with the common expression of Chinese,and then readers will find it easier to understand the contents of the original text.This report provides reference and guidance to translation of the text of similar genres in the days to come,and also can hopefully stimulate readers’ interest in reading and academic research. |
