| The Source of Wisdom is a dictionary in both Tibetan and Mongolian,the purpose of compiling which was to provide the correct translation of the terms recorded in the Tanjul Sutra.The dictionary comprises 11 volumes,printed and published in 1742.Quite large number of animal names and plant names appeared in the document.Therefore,the research of the animal names and plant names will be of great academic value to the research of Mongolian vocabulary and terminology.By using statistical and comparative methods,this paper makes statistics of Mongolian animal and plant terms in The Source of Wisdom,finds out the lost or not commonly used words in modern Mongolian.This paper also conducts further studies to certain animal and plant names,especially to their changes of the name features by comparing them with those in other literatures.The thesis consists of five parts,including preface,chapter 1,Chapter 2,conclusion and Appendix.The Preface describes the reasons for the topic selection,research objectives,research significance,research methods,and data sources,etc.The first chapter classifies the 126 animal names in The Source of Wisdom,into three categories: names of birds,names of livestock &beasts,names of reptiles and insects.On the basis of classification,a further study is made on the traditional Mongolian plant names,on the translated plant names,and on the plant names with Aligali alphabet transcription.The second chapter classifies the 141 plant names in The Source of Wisdom,into three types: tree(bush)names,herb(grass)names,vegetable and grain names,then subdivides each type.The conclusion part summarizes the whole content of the paper,and draws the research results. |
