After the revision of the NECS(edition in 2020),various new editions of textbooks have sprung up and were put into use.Teachers and students may have doubts about how to use the new edition textbooks. Therefore, comparing the new edition with the old edition textbooks is crucial for teachers and students to use them better. The purpose of this study is to identify the salient changes in the new edition of the textbook.Through a comparative study on the old and new edition textbooks, the thesis takes a close scrutiny into the contents of the textbooks for their changes and makes evaluation on the data collected from teachers’ and students’ feedbacks on the two different editions of the textbooks,so as to provide reference for teachers so as to better their interpreting and implementing the textbooks for their optimum use in teaching, and to contribute some insights to the material development that the teachers, researchers and textbooks compilers are concerned about. In this study, three research questions to be addressed as follows:1.What are the specific changes in the structure of the textbook in new edition by FLTRP in comparison of the old edition through the internal evaluation?2.What are the specific changes in the new edition of the textbooks published by FLTRP that are conducive to the development of students’ comprehensive language abilities in comparison of the old edition through the internal evaluation?3.What feedbacks do the users of the textbooks by FLTRP give in the macro and micro dimensions through the external evaluation? To answer above questions, this study selected contents for research from one of the representative types of textbooks, two editions of the English textbooks for senior high school students, were compiled and revised on New Curriculum Standards(2017)and Old ones(2003)respectively and published by FLTRP in 2019 and 2006.The content evaluation method was adopted in a two-step process. The first step was to make an internal evaluation that aimed to evaluate the structural of the textbook. The second step was to do the external evaluation that was modified from the one advocated by Cheng Xiaotang, and questionnaires and interviews were used for data collection from the feedbacks of the users of the two editions textbooks. The data were processed through the Excel and SPSS software. The results from the internal evaluation shows that compared to the old edition textbook, the basic structure of the new edition textbook is more in line with the requirements of the NECS(edition in 2020)for the development of students’ comprehensive language abilities. At the same time,it emphasizes the cultivation of students’ higher-order thinking ability. The results from the external evaluation show that teachers and students highly evaluated the new edition while the old edition textbook got a relatively high support rate as well, which means that the new edition meets the needs of teachers and students’ teaching and learning, and the old edition as a classic textbook used by more than ten years has been accepted by teachers and students as well. |
