Reading acts as an important approach for students to acquire language knowledge,train reading skills,cultivate cultural awareness,and develop thinking quality.It is also the main focus of high school English teaching.The texture provided by cohesive relation can promote students to understand the context of the discourse,appreciate the meaning of the text,and sort out the frame structure of text.Whether students can understand discourse coherence is one of the main teaching tasks of teachers,which is also the basis for teaching speaking and writing.At present,the existing research mostly discusses the influence of discourse cohesion and coherence on students’ reading and writing ability,however,rarely involving the practice of reading teaching.In addition,the research on discourse cohesion and coherence teaching is relatively scattered,and there is no overall framework for cohesion and coherence teaching.The research results mostly focus on the promotion of textual cohesion and coherence on students’ English ability.Teacher’s relative knowledge about discourse cohesion and coherence as well as teaching practice are unknown.Therefore,it is great theoretical and practical significance to carry out an investigation on the current situation of discourse cohesion and coherence teaching in reading teaching in senior high schools.This research uses literature research,questionnaire survey and interview methods to investigate the current situation of discourse cohesion and coherence teaching in English reading teaching in high school.By combing domestic and foreign research literature on cohesion and coherence,this research constructs a teaching framework for reading teaching,including grammatical cohesion,lexical cohesion,theme-rheme cohesion,genre-structure cohesion,and contextual cohesion.The questionnaire consists of text interpretation,teaching content and teaching methods.Based on the questionnaire,the research designs research tools,carry out a questionnaire survey on 90 teachers in Kunming City,Yunnan Province,and select 6high school teachers for in-depth interviews.The research results indicate that:(1)Teachers’ understanding of discourse cohesion and coherence is relatively one-sided;(2)In the reading class,it is difficult for teachers to implement discourse cohesion teaching;(3)Teachers have similar emphasis on discourse interpretation based on textual cohesion,and the interpretation methods are single;(4)Teachers pay more attention to the specific cohesive relations within the text when teaching reading;(5)Teachers mostly use questioning and visual teaching methods to carry out teaching;(6)Novice teachers are not good at teaching text cohesion and coherence.After in-depth analysis of the results,this paper will put forward suggestions for solving problems,hoping to provide corresponding reference for English teachers to carry out discourse cohesion and coherence teaching in reading teaching.
