| Discourse-based rational cloze is one of the test types of the English language part in the high school entrance examination,and the main purpose is to test students’ comprehensive discourse ability.From the design of the test paper,the proportion of discourse-based rational cloze in the test paper is 10.6%,and its importance is self-evident.The test requires students to have a solid basic knowledge of vocabulary and grammar and to fill in the blanks in context within the time limit.Therefore,discourse-based rational cloze requires students to have a certain level of logical thinking and comprehensive discourse skills.Through the observation and analysis of the learning condition of students’ discourse-based rational cloze,it was found that the students generally thought this kind of question type was more difficult,and some students even had a sense of fear for it.At the same time,I also discussed with several experienced English teachers about the topic and found two reasons for students’ weakness in discourse-based rational cloze.Firstly,they did not have a solid grasp of basic knowledge;Secondly,they lacked the concept of discourse and know little about the cohesion and coherence of discourse,let alone using discourse-related knowledge to solve problems.The author found through the literature that the current research on English discourse-based rational cloze mainly takes itself as the entry point to explore its specific propositional characteristics,feasible solution ideas and effective teaching suggestions,but lacks the relevant research to guide discourse-based rational cloze teaching with the help of linguistic theory.Based on the cohesion and coherence theory,this thesis explores the teaching model to effectively improve junior high school students’ discourse ability in discourse-based rational cloze from the perspective of teachers’ teaching through theoretical analysis and empirical research.Two questions are raised in this study: First,how to apply the cohesion and coherence theory in junior high school English class teaching in discourse-based rational cloze.Secondly,to what extent does the theory of cohesion and coherence contribute to the development of students’ comprehensive discourse ability? This study was conducted with students in two classes of a junior high school in Wanzhou.The two classes were divided into a controlled class(class10)and an uncontrolled class(class9).The controlled class used a teaching mode guided by the cohesion and coherence theory,while the uncontrolled class used a teaching mode based on the traditional grammar-translation method.The paradigm of the study was an experimental research,which lasted for 5month.Questionnaire,tests and interview are used as research methods,By comparing and analyzing the pre-test and post-test results of the controlled class and the uncontrolled class,and the pre-test and post-test results of the controlled class itself,I found that: the application of the cohesion and coherence theory to the teaching of English discourse-based rational cloze has a positive effect on discourse-based rational cloze learning.On the one hand,it can improve students’ discourse-based rational cloze performance and problem solving ability to a certain extent,change their attitudes towards discourse-based rational cloze,improve their problem solving habits,and enhance their motivation and confidence in learning discourse-based rational cloze.On the other hand,it helps improve students’ overall discourse awareness and develop discourse analysis skills.Therefore,it is feasible and effective to apply the cohesion and coherence theory to the teaching of discourse-based rational cloze in junior high school.Finally,this study also proposes the following suggestions for junior high school English teachers: 1.change the traditional teaching concept and use the cohesion and coherence theory to guide the teaching of the discourse;2.continuously explore the teaching mode of English discourse-based rational cloze based on the cohesion and coherence theory;3.pay attention to the cohesion and coherence of the discourse and integrate the cohesion knowledge in other types of English lessons.The author hopes that through this thesis,the exploration of the cohesion and coherence theory applied to the teaching of English discourse-based rational cloze in junior high school can enrich the content of related practical and theoretical fields and provide some references for the teaching of English discourse-based rational cloze in junior high school. |
