| In order to implement the educational function of English teaching,the Ministry of Education started a new round of curriculum and textbook reform,in response to which,the High School English Textbooks by Shanghai Educational Publishing House came into being.In order to make better use of the new teaching materials,it is particularly critical for high school English teachers to grasp the educational ideas within them.In the textbook,directive instructions carry the intentional ideas of the textbook writers as guided by the English curriculum standards.Thus,the study of textbook instructions helps to interpret the teaching approaches required by the curriculum standards,so as to provide suggestions for teachers.This study tries to analyze the textbook instructions in SEP High School English Required Textbooks with the research methods of corpus analysis and text analysis.Based on Bloom’s Taxonomy of cognitive objectives,this study analyzes the frequency of cognitive verbs in the textbooks from the six cognitive levels.Then,with further analysis of high frequency words in different levels,this study concludes the teaching approaches behind the cognitive activities as reflected in the curriculum standards.Finally,the study proposes suggestions for English teachers.The research finds that questions,imaginary words,and words associated with cooperation frequently appear in the six levels of cognitive activities,which means the textbook points to the cultivation of students’ multi-level thinking ability,the teaching activities based on the theme context,and the teaching method of students’ cooperative learning.In other words,the new textbooks reflect three teaching approaches as required by the curriculum standards: thinking ability,situational teaching,and cooperative learning.Therefore,this study proposes suggestions for teachers to use the new textbooks in carrying out classroom activities.Firstly,teachers should decode the cognitive objectives presented in the textbook instructions.Secondly,teachers are supposed to carry out classroom activities under the theme context with the help of the textbooks.Thirdly,the teachers should encourage the collaboration work among students to promote the formation of an open classroom. |
