| English classroom environment directly restricts the teaching process,which have an important effect in improving learners’ English academic performance.In addition,learners’ academic engagement is also one of the important factors predicting their academic performance.It can be seen that students’ academic performance is not only influenced by external environmental factors(such as classroom environment),but also by individual characteristics(such as academic engagement).Literature shows that scholars at home and abroad have conducted multi-angle studies on learners’ perception of classroom environment and academic engagement,but there are few studies on the mediating effect of academic engagement on the relationship between senior high school students’ perception of English classroom environment and English academic performance.Therefore,the author takes English academic engagement as the mediating variable to explore the internal relationship and influence mechanism among senior high school students’ English classroom environment perception,English academic engagement and English academic performance so as to provide factual basis for senior high school English teaching reform.With the method of questionnaire survey,interview and statistical analysis,taking senior high school students’ English Classroom Environment scale and senior high school students’ English Academic Engagement scale as the main research tools,choosing 281 senior high school students from a middle school in Quanzhou,Fujian Province as participants,and choosing 12 students as interviewees,this study aims to explore the following three questions:1.What is the general level of senior high school students’ perception of English classroom environment and academic engagement?2.Are there significant differences in senior high school students’ English classroom environment perception and academic engagement between students with high score of English and those with low score?3.Does senior high school students’ English academic engagement have a mediating effect on the relationship between the perception of English classroom environment and English academic performance?Through investigation and data analysis,the results indicate that:1.Senior high school students are generally satisfied with the current English classroom environment(m=3.611).Among them,students are most satisfied with class order(m=3.775),and least satisfied with task orientation(m=3.413).In addition,the overall level of senior high school students’ English academic engagement is at a medium level(m=3.208).Among them,the level of motivation engagement is the highest(m=3.672),while the level of thinking engagement is the lowest(m=2.633).2.There are significant differences in the English classroom environment perception(p=0.000<0.05)and its four sub-dimensions between students with high score of English and those with low score,including teacher support(p=0.000<0.05),task orientation(p=0.000<0.05),peer cooperation(p=0.000<0.05)and class order(p=0.000<0.05),but there is no significant difference in student affinity dimension(p=0.201>0.05).In addition,there are significant differences in the English academic engagement(p=0.000<0.05)and its five sub-dimensions between students with high score of English and those with low score,including behavior engagement(p=0.000<0.05),emotional engagement(p=0.000<0.05),motivation engagement(p=0.000<0.05),strategy engagement(p=0.000<0.05)and thinking engagement(p=0.000<0.05).3.There is significant correlation among senior high school students’ perception of English classroom environment,English academic engagement and English academic performance.In addition,senior high school students’ English academic engagement plays a partial mediating effect on the relationship between the perception of English classroom and English academic performance.Among them,the direct effect value of students’ English classroom environment perception on English academic performance is 0.282(p=0.003<0.05),the indirect effect value is 0.367(p =0.001<0.05),and the total effect value is 0.649(p=0.001<0.05).Based on the above research results,some relevant teaching proposals are put forward from the aspects of optimizing task setting and improving students’ ability of applying strategies and thinking,so as to create a harmonious English classroom environment and improve students’ English academic engagement and academic performance. |
