The Study Of Ma Gongyu’s Seal Script And Seal Carving And Its Enlightenment To My Creation

Ma Gongyu,a calligrapher and seal carver of the Hai School,was known as an "all-rounder in the art world",with high attainments in calligraphy,painting and seal carving.In this paper,we firstly introduce Ma’s family of "two hundred years of calligraphy and painting",and then elaborate on Ma’s personal artistic achievements and contributions to the cultural cause of Wenzhou.The author selects some representative seal script and seal carving works for stylistic investigation,dividing the seal script into three categories and seal carving into five categories through the path of mastery,and focuses on the seal carving works,concluding that the seal script and seal carving styles complement each other.In addition,he summarises the reasons for the formation of Ma’s seal carving style,and discusses his ideas on seal carving,including the Qin and Han dynasties,the first method of seal carving,learning from the past as a teacher,and the cultivation of seal carving through learning.Finally,through the study of the above,we use a combination of copying and creation to find artistic elements in Ma’s works that match the author’s temperament,and draw on his artistic language and calligraphic ideas to complete seal script works and multiple seal carvings in pursuit of high antique artistic effects.
