Abstract/Summary:
Reading is of great value and use for a nation and its citizens,so cultivating students’ English reading literacy is one of the important goals of school English teaching. However, the limited and out-of-date reading materials,test-oriented classroom reading teaching, the limited classroom reading teaching mode and insufficient guidance in extra-curriculum reading result in the failure of achieving the goal and bringing great challenges to English teachers. The cultivation of students’ English reading literacy depends on the organic combination of classroom reading teaching and extensive extra-curriculum reading.Sustained silent reading, one form of extensive reading, shows certain advantages in improving students’ English reading literacy. In sustained silent reading, students are supposed to read quietly and freely in a short period of time on a daily basis without being disturbed by any assignments like answering questions, taking notes,or writing book reports,as a result of which students are more likely to gain their enjoyment in reading itself. It is also proved that sustained silent reading has positive effects on improving reading fluency, enhancing the application of reading strategies, acquiring knowledge, cultivating students’ interest in reading, helping them form reading habits and so on.With the guidance of the Input Hypothesis, the Affective Filter Hypothesis and Self Learning Theory, the thesis improves the principles and pre-reading preparation period of sustained silent reading, aiming to explore the effects of sustained silent reading on English reading literacy of senior high school students from two dimensions, reading ability and reading character. An empirical study is carried out in a public senior high school in Kunming Yunnan Province, with the help of questionnaires, tests and classroom observation. The results confirm it is the sustained and uninterrupted silent reading,self-selected and interest-based graded reading materials, and the favorable reading environment that have positive effects on senior high school students’ English reading literacy.By introducing sustained silent reading into English classroom teaching, this thesis explores a student-centered reading guidance model to effectively promote the senior high school English teaching level and improve students’ English reading literacy.Hopefully, the thesis can make a difference to English reading teaching, making a contribution to the domestic research on English reading literacy and sustained silent reading.
