A Study On The Effect Of Narrow Sustained Silent Reading On Senior High School Students’ English Reading Literacy

Abstract/Summary:
The English Curriculum Standards for General High Schools(2017 Edition)proposes the core literacy,which is defined as the "essential character and key competency" for learning English.With the proposal of core literacy of English in the English Curriculum Standards for General High Schools(2017 Edition),requiring students to develop a range of competencies,the English reading literacy of high school students has received more and more attention.Many researches also show that reading can not only help students to expand their vocabularies and broaden their horizons,but also enhance their cognitive abilities.To investigate effective ways to develop students’ reading literacy of high school students by doing narrow sustained silent reading,the author selected all the students in Grade 1 Class 3 at X senior high school in Xi’an,Shaanxi Province for a questionnaire survey,selected six students for a case study,and interviewed these six students and two teachers.In summary,the author used questionnaires,interviews and case study to explore the following two questions.(1)What different degrees of influence does narrow sustained silent reading on students’ reading character and reading ability?(2)What are the main factors that affect students’ narrow sustained silent reading?The research identified that the “NSSR” model has a positive influence on all elements of English reading literacy for senior high school students.Narrow sustained silent reading assists the pupils in forming good reading behaviors,discovering the charm of English reading and improving their English reading skills.Compared with the improvement of students’ reading skills,the impact of narrow sustained silent reading on students’ reading literacy is more evident in the area of reading character within a short period of time.There are some main factors that affect students’ narrow sustained silent reading,such as reading volume,reading interests,reading atmosphere and so on.Reading volume ensures continuous reading input for students.Reading interest keeps students’ attention focused on the reading materials.A good reading atmosphere allows students to read without interruptions.Based on this,teachers should choose reading materials that are of interest to their students and create a good reading environment,and help them when they have trouble in reading.
