| As an important scholar in the field of pragmatic philosophy of art and analytical aesthetics,Margolis has his own unique views on the interpretation of literature and art.The core of Margolis’ theory of interpretation includes two dimensions: one is the nature and boundary of interpretable and the other is the objectivity of interpretation.Margolis proposed a dualistic division between the natural world and the cultural world--entities in the natural world have physical attributes and thus have "definite" nature; The entity in the cultural world is an intentional entity with the attribute of intention, and it has the "definable" and non-essential "essence",which is changeable and replaceable. The world of culture is the world of intention, the world of explanation. This paper mainly discusses Margolis’ theory of interpretation from the following three aspects. The first chapter discusses Margolis’ discrimination of the relationship between description and interpretation, points out the emphasis of description and interpretation on different types of art,and points out the limitations of this metaphysical conceptual framework. The second chapter introduces Margolis’ critique of Beardsley’s interpretive concept of objectivism, which is closely related to his reflection on art ontology. The third chapter discusses Margolis’ s critique of various views of intentionalism, including the critique of Hirsch’s theory of interpretation and the liquidation of "new intentionalism" in the camp of analytical aesthetics. The fourth chapter introduces the position of Margolis’ theory of interpretation in his philosophy, and makes a general reflection on his theory of interpretation.Margolis always focuses on the second level of interpretation, and tried to put forward a set of coherent theory of interpretation. His exploration and critical examination of the deep logic behind the existing interpretation views have important reference significance for the construction of Chinese interpretation theory system. |
