As an American writer and journalist pursuing truth all her life,Anna Louise Strong introduced China and the Chinese revolution to the world and became a good friend with Chinese people. In the new era, paying more attention to her life and writings will help encourage and attract more foreign friends to actively participate in the great practice of telling China’s stories, and conveying China’s voice. The translator took the novel Wild River(excerpt)by Strong as the source text for this report.Based on the historical events of the Soviet Union from 1920 s to 1940 s and filled with praise to the new Soviet regime, the novel tells a string of struggles of a gang of ordinary Soviet children for individual survival and growth,as well as for the construction and defense of the new Soviet socialist regime. The translator took Halliday and Hasan’s cohesion theory as the guiding theory for his translation practice.Lying in a sentence or sentences and paragraphs, cohesion is a vital mean of ensuring discourses coherent. While constructing discourses, the authors usually use cohesion to make the discourses logically clear, coherent and smooth. Therefore, the process of translating was a process in which the translator analyzed the ways of cohesion used in the source text and reconstructed ones in the target text.On the basis of being faithful to the source text, the translator analyzed the differences between English and Chinese in terms of cohesion, and applied appropriate cohesion means to reproduce the overall style of the source text. The difficulty that the translator encountered in this translation practice was how to construct a logical relationship in the target text when the cohesion of the target text was affected due to the lack of logical words in the source text.In response to this difficulty, the translation strategy adopted by the translator is to appropriately supplement logical words in the target text when the logical relationship was not clear to achieve text coherence. This practice provided some concrete references for the English-Chinese translation practice of novels as a literary genre, and proved that Halliday and Hasan’s cohesion theory can effectively guide such practice.
