In recent years,with the increasing communication between China and the West and the continuous development of sociology,a large number of sociological monographs have emerged,which has promoted the idea sharing and the collision of disparate ideas.Sociological monographs are logical with deep implications.The translation of sociological monographs is of high value.Disasters,Risks and Revelation: Making Sense of Our Times is a sociological monograph written by American writer Steve Matthewman and published in 2015.The translation material this time is excerpted from the work.They’re chapters three and four of this book.Based on disaster research and social theory,the work provides a critical examination of the causes,consequences,precautions of disasters and enlightenment to modern society.In the translation practice,the translator selects Toury’s translation norm theory as the guiding theory.After the completion of the translation practice,the writer writes translation practice report accordingly.Under the framework of translation norm theory,Toury puts forward three types of norms,namely,preliminary norms,initial norms and operational norms.Based on these three kinds of norms and combined with the specific examples,this paper analyzes the preliminary norms affecting translation practice from the characteristics of the times and the selection of the translation object,the initial norms affecting translation strategies from the cultural and lexical levels and the operational norms affecting translation strategies from the translation skills of amplification,omission and rewriting,so as to illustrate the practical guiding significance of Toury’s translation norm theory to the translation of sociological texts.“Bringing in” foreign sociological monographs can also pave the way for China’s sociological thoughts to “go out”.
