In 2017,The English Curriculum Standards for Senior High Schools issued by the Ministry of education clearly put forward the concept of "key competency in English",and formulated grading objectives in accordance with it,providing a clear direction for English teachers to design teaching objectives.Key competency in English is a whole,including language ability,cultural awareness,thinking capacity and learning ability,which are interrelated and inseparable.The research on key competency is relatively comprehensive,but the research on key competency in English is less,especially the number of relevant studies on the cultivation of four aspects at the same time is very small.Therefore,after summarizing the relevant research on key competency in English at home and abroad,this study investigates 200 students and 100 English teachers in three senior high schools in Anyang City,Henan Province by questionnaire and interview based on humanistic theory and constructivism theory to answer two research questions:(1)What is the current situation of the cultivation of key competency in English in senior high school in Anyang?(2)What are the reasons that affect the cultivation of key competency in English in senior high school in Anyang?The findings of this study are as follows:(1)The cultivation of key competency in English in senior high school in Anyang is at a medium level and needs to be improved.The cultivation of language ability,cultural awareness,thinking capacity and learning ability are unbalanced;(2)The reasons affecting the cultivation of key competency in English are: teachers’ understanding and their awareness of key competency in English is not enough;students’ interest in learning English is not enough,some students only pay attention to their grades,and their cooperation with teachers is at a low level;there are a few training activities related to key competency in English.Based on the above findings,this study puts forward some suggestions:(1)Teachers should independently learn the relevant knowledge of key competency in English,enhance their awareness of cultivating students’ key competency in English,balance the investment in language ability,cultural awareness,thinking capacity and learning ability,and improve students’ interest in cooperation and participation in English class;(2)students should correct their learning attitude,actively cooperate with teachers to complete the cultivation of key competency in English,and think more,criticize more and innovate more in learning;(3)schools should provide more training resources for teachers,regularly check the teaching quality of teachers,especially the cultivation of key competency in English and provide good environment for teaching. |
