National English Curriculum Standards(2017)proposed that cultivating and developing students’ English subject core competences is the specific goal of the senior high school English curriculum.English disciplinary competency is one of the keys to cultivating students’ English subject core competences.In English teaching,teaching activities are the main form and means.Therefore,it is necessary to design a variety of reading teaching activities based on the English disciplinary competency framework to cultivate students’ disciplinary competency.Most domestic researches on English teaching design focus on theory.Few people study reading teaching activities from the perspective of English disciplinary competency framework,which leaves room for this research.Based on English disciplinary competency framework,this research conducted a case study on five teachers’ reading teaching activity design in a middle school in Rongxian through interviews and case analysis of teaching activity design.The research questions are as follows:(1)What types of teaching activities are designed by the English teachers for their reading teaching?(2)Which English disciplinary competencies are cultivated by teachers’ reading teaching activities?(3)What factors influence teachers’ reading teaching activity design?Through collecting,sorting out and analyzing data,the following research conclusions are drawn: 1.Among the reading teaching activities designed by high school English teachers,comprehension activities account for up to 60%,and application activities account for more than 25%,while innovation activities only account for about 15%;2.Based on English disciplinary competency framework,in the reading teaching activity designs,teachers are more inclined to cultivate students’ summarizing competency(A-3)and perceiving competency(A-1)of comprehension competency and integrating competency(B-3)of application competency,followed by describing competency(B-1)and analyzing competency(B-2)of application competency,criticizing competency(C-3)of innovation competency;3.There are three reasons that influence the teachers’ reading activities design on the cultivation of English disciplinary competencies:(1)Teachers’ teaching concepts are affected by test-oriented education;(2)Teachers lack theoretical knowledge about English disciplinary competency;(3)Teachers lack relevant practical guidance.The author hopes that this research can provide some enlightenment for high school English teachers on the reading teaching activity design based on the English disciplinary competency framework. |
