Research On Novice English Teachers’ Professional Development Of Rural Junior Middle Schools Of Nanyang City In Henan Province

Abstract/Summary:
In recent years,with the loss of students in rural schools,improving the professional development level of rural teachers has become an urgent problem to be solved.Therefore,it is also necessary to understand the current situation of professional development of English teachers in rural junior middle schools,especially the problems faced by novice English teachers in teachers’ professional development and what kind of teachers’ professional development needs they have.Based on the theory of teacher professional development: professional knowledge,professional competence and professional ideology,this research investigates the actual situation of professional development of 30 rural novice teachers in Nanyang,Henan Province through questionnaires and interviews,aiming to answer the following three questions:(1)What is the current situation of the professional development of novice English teachers in rural areas of Nanyang city?(2)What are the reasons for the current situation of professional development of novice teachers in rural areas?(3)What are the professional development needs of novice English teachers in rural areas of Nanyang city?The research results show that:(1)The overall level of professional development of novice English teachers in rural junior middle schools in Nanyang,Henan is high,in which the level of professional ideology ranks first,the level of professional ability comes second,and the level of professional knowledge is the weakest.(2)The reasons for the current situation of the professional development of novice English teachers in rural junior high schools are as follows: the school’s attention is not enough,the degree of social recognition is insufficient,and the consciousness of independent professional development needs to be improved.(3)The needs of novice English teachers in rural junior middle schools for professional development,including cultivating their own professional ability and wishing the school to provide more time and training opportunities.According to the research results,this paper puts forward the following suggestions for the professional development of novice English teachers in rural junior middle schools: on the one hand,the government should guide urban and rural schools to help each other.On the other hand,building a distance teacher training platform and establishing a high-quality learning resource center to provide a way for the professional development of novice English teachers in rural areas.Schools should reduce work loads,provide time for the professional development of novice English teachers.At the same time,a teacher learning resource centers should be established to provide opportunities for teachers’ professional development.Schools should encourage novice teachers to take part in the competition to promote their self-development awareness.For individual teachers,they should improve their awareness of self-development and actively seek approach to professional development.This study has certain limitations: firstly,the items in the questionnaire are not enough to cover all aspects of the professional development of junior high school English teachers,and secondly,the research sample is not sufficient.
