In teaching activities, students are the main body of the whole teaching activities, and improving students’ autonomous learning is also one of the purposes of teaching activities. In English teaching activities, the independent understanding of English is relatively high.Junior high school English is the fundamental link for students to learn English in the future, and in this link,it is essential to cultivate students’ autonomous learning ability.Combining the characteristics of English subject teaching, this paper analyzes and discusses the student’s autonomous learning about autonomous learning cognition, the establishment of individual learning goals, autonomous learning methods, and autonomous learning habits. The new curriculum reform requirements,in the teaching activities, the students should play the main role and the teacher should play a leading role, and to cultivate students’ subjectivity and initiative, autonomous learning in the new curriculum reform should be actively promoted. In fact, since the 1980 s,many scholars at home and abroad have paid more and more attention to autonomous learning in English for school students. However, the previous research on English autonomous learning was mainly conducted in senior high school, and there were fewer studies conducted on English autonomous learning for junior high school students.Basing on the theory of autonomous learning, this study aims to answer the following three questions: 1)What is the overall situation of junior high school students’ English autonomous learning like? 2)Are there any differences between the boys and the girls in their English autonomous learning? 3)What are the factors affecting junior high school students’ English autonomous learning? The physical and mental development of junior high school students is not very mature and their self-control ability is poor.Although they have the ability to learn independently, they still need the supervision and management of teachers and parents. It is necessary to cultivate students’ ability to learn independently. Therefore,by adopting a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods, this study employs questionnaire and interviews to collect data, facts and opinions from 317 students from Xiaohaotu Middle School,Yulin City,Shaanxi Province. The respondents are from three classes in the seventh, eighth, and ninth grades. There are 112 students in the seventh,106 in the eighth grade and 99 in the ninth grade. And among them 30 interviewees are from different grades. The research results indicate that most students can not do an excellent job of autonomous learning in the current English learning. They seldom have a pleasant learning experience and strong motivation to learn. Therefore, students lack initiative and planning when learning. The main factors affecting the autonomous learning of middle school students include the environment, teachers and students factors. At the same time, boys and girls do have certain differences in autonomic learning, but from the overall point of view, the difference is not obviously important. The author offers the following main suggestions: 1)The teachers should consider the needs of the students and apply different teaching methods with the philosophy of student-centered teaching.2)The students should practice English everyday and develop some good learning habits.3)The school authorities should update educational philosophy and pay attention to the individual differences of the students. There are some shortcomings in this study, the time is limited in the study, the number of research subjects is not large, and the representativeness is not strong enough.Future researches should select more different research subjects and use the reasonable time to make the research results more convincing.
