Ted Chiang is one of the most famous writers of science fiction in the world today.His science fiction works explore the following questions: What is Free Will? Does the individual have Free Will? Where does Free Will end up? This paper analyzes Ted Chiang’s 17 works published so far,and presents the characteristics of his Free Will,interdisciplinary writing,its causes and significance.Ted Chiang’s view of Free Will is influenced by Daniel Dennett’s Compatibilism.This theory confirms the compatibility of Free Will and determinism by clarifying the relationship between determinism and causality,inevitability and immutability.Accordingly,the Free Will in Ted Chiang’s novels is anti-causality,non-fatalism,and can be molded,with three characteristics:arbitrariness,selectivity and rationality.Secondly,Ted Chiang’s novels are all in the form of short and medium stories,with a multidisciplinary perspective,often from the religious and ethical dimensions of the living space of Free Will and Free Will outlets and other issues.Finally,The theme of Free Will in Ted Chiang’s science fiction is influenced by personal interest and social environment,and the significance of writing lies in advocating reflection on technology and humanistic care.In short,Ted Chiang firmly believes that human beings have Free Will in science fiction and advocates individuals to pursue a happy life under the premise of freedom.
