Ted Chiang and Han Song have very different cultural backgrounds and styles of works, but their science fiction literary works both display a different approach to the creation of science fiction with a classic technological bent.Ted Chiang and Han Song conceive science fiction stories in terms of ideas, and they both value the humanistic and literary aspects of their novels, reflecting a reimagining of Welsh-style elite science fiction. At the same time,Ted Chiang and Han Song bring postmodern style to science fiction, innovating the form of science fiction and displaying both rational and irrational artistic styles. Therefore,Ted Chiang and Han Song’s non-technical science fiction has strong research value at a time when “hard” science fiction is all the rage. The first chapter looks at Ted Chiang’s and Han Song’s science fiction from the perspective of literary history.Firstly, analyzing the relationship between science fiction literature and the Romance tradition, arguing that the fictional nature of science fiction literature is a return to the Romance tradition, and that science fiction literature should follow the Romance tradition, transcend the “technological supremacy” and escape the shackles of “rationality”,and pursue a freer way of creation.Secondly,we analyze Ted Chiang and Han Song’s acceptance of and rebellion against previous writers and literary genres, arguing that Ted Chiang’s science fiction is American science fiction that conceals oriental thinking, and Han Song’s is Chinese science fiction that absorbs Western culture. They oppose the single pursuit of technology in “hard”science fiction and attach importance to humanistic care and artistic pursuit.Chapter 2 analyzes the theme of Ted Chiang’s and Han Song’s science fiction novels.Ted Chiang and Han Song rebel against the tradition of science fiction literature that uses technology to conceive stories, and they use ideas to support science fiction stories, and show both rational and irrational creative tendencies of “conceptual science fiction”,and they attach importance to humanistic thinking, creating a new form of science fiction aesthetics that emphasizes humanism.Chapter 3 analyzes the formal innovation of Ted Chiang and Han Song’s science fiction works. They bring the postmodern literature’s innovation of temporal and spatial patterns and the structure of works to science fiction, which enriches the literature of science fiction works;they create a unique style in language and make a new attempt of science fiction language.Chapter 4 analyzes the aesthetic functions brought by Ted Chiang and Han Song’s science fiction literary forms.Ted Chiang and Han Song creatively introduces the present world into the realm of science fiction, neither imitating reality nor fantasizing about the future. They contemplate the plight of human beings after technology shines into reality, bringing a rich humanistic reflection to science fiction works, and performing the function of social intervention and aesthetic healing of literary works. The identity anxiety of science fiction writers and readers has prompted the field of science fiction literature to be keen on setting boundaries, and this competition for discourse has limited the innovation of science fiction literature.Science fiction literature needs to be “untied”,to return to the Romance tradition, and to seek new and different forms of content. The science fiction novels of Ted Chiang and Han Song have left behind the technological center of science fiction literature and created science fiction novels centered on ideas, which has enriched the main theme of science fiction literature;on the other hand, science fiction literature needs to return to the Welsh elite tradition. They let science fiction literature go beyond “cultural consumption” to “cultural construction”.
