Core competencies have become one of the key topics in education research in recent years.Core competencies put forward different requirements for different subjects.English core competencies dedicate to cultivate students’ language competence,learning ability,thinking quality and cultural awareness.Reading plays an important role in English teaching in high school.Therefore,reading teaching is undoubtedly the most important way to cultivate students’ English core competencies.Grade 1 is the beginning of senior high school and a key stage to develop students’ core competencies.So,what is the current situation of English reading teaching in Grade 1 and what are the problems? How to solve these problems? These are the things that need to be discovered.Therefore,it is of great significance to explore English reading teaching in Grade 1 from the perspective of English core competencies.This research is based on Maslow’s hierarchy of needs,humanism theory and social constructivism theory.The participants of this study are 200 students and 4English teachers in Grade 1 in a senior high school in Tianjin.Through collecting and analyzing classroom observation,questionnaire and interview data,two questions are going to be answered:(1)What is the current situation of English reading teaching(problems in Grade 1 of the senior high school)from the perspective of English core competencies?(2)What are the causes of the problems in English reading teaching in Grade 1?Research finds some problems in English reading teaching in Grade 1: At the language level,teachers attach great importance to students’ language competence,but ignore the cultivation of language skills.At the cultural level,teachers pay more attention to cultural knowledge transmission than cross-cultural ability cultivating.At the thinking level,teachers don’t emphasize the development of students’ logical thinking quality.In terms of learning ability,teachers stress the development of students’ cognitive ability,but ignore the development of metacognitive ability.The causes of these problems are as follows: Firstly,English teachers’ educational philosophies are backward.They have weak awareness of English core competencies and adopt single teaching method.Secondly,the school lacks teaching equipment and teaching materials.Teaching content is not comprehensive.Thirdly,some students have biased learning opinions,and their learning methods are insufficient.Based on these problems,this paper puts forward suggestions for school,teachers and students.
