| The translation material of this translation report comes from The Power of Ritual, which is the first book by Casper ter Kuile,an American theological activist. The author of this book holds a master’s degree in theology and public policy from Harvard University and has been a ministerial innovation researcher at Harvard Theological Seminary. He thinks of tiny things around him carefully and discusses the application of sacred reading in daily life.Nowadays, people’s faith in religion is no longer so fanatical;anxiety, emptiness and confusion fill in modern people’s hearts;because of being addicted to electronic devices, people neglect to enjoy life and experience their inner world. What is used to support their spiritual world? This book tells readers to focus on what they do every day, even some ordinary things such as reading and eating,as a spiritual practice, which will be meaningful. And they can also get spiritual inspiration from these small things. At present, there is no Chinese translation of this work. The translator selects the first chapter of The Power of Ritual and completes the translation practice of 13000 words. In view of the characteristics of informative and imperative texts,in the process of practice, the translator follows Peter Newmark’s communicative translation theory as a reference. It is quite essential to make the translation produce the same effect on the target language readers as the original text does, which also makes the target language translation smooth. There are five chapters in the report: the first chapter is the task introduction, which focuses on the background, meaning and structure of the mission;the second chapter summarizes the whole translation process from three aspects: pre-translation,mid-translation and post-translation;the third chapter discusses the background of communicative translation theory, its main arguments, and its applicability to this translation assignment.Chapter Four summarizes the translation methods used in the process of completing the task, which is described in three levels of vocabulary, syntax and text.As a conclusion,Chapter Five briefly summarizes the findings and gains in the process of completing the task, and points out the difficulties and solutions in order to improve the translation level. This translation exercise has not only provided the translator with a new understanding of how to enjoy a sense of ritual to life, but also improves her ability to use translation methods.Through this translation practice, the translator realizes that translation work cannot accomplish at one stroke. It needs continuous practice to accumulate experience and summarize skills and methods. It is hoped that in this way,the translator can learn more translation methods and improve the abilities of translation to lay a good foundation for the future translation practice. |
