Biography of Flowers on the Sea is a novel written by Han Bangqing in Wu dialect.It was published in 1892 in serial form in the regularly published illustrated fiction The Wonder Book of the Sea.By the time The Wonder Book of the Sea ceased to be published,it had published 15 issues,30 times in all.In1894,64 chapters of Biography of Flowers on the Sea was published in a single line,and soon Han Bangqing died.In 1922,the Tsinghua Book Bureau of Shanghai rearranged and issued it,and Xu Jinfu made the preface for it.In 1926,Shanghai Yadong Library published the "Yadong Edition" with Hu Shi,Liu Bannong for its foreword,Wang Yuanfang for its punctuation.It,along with a Dream of Red Mansions and The Scholars,is regarded as an old novel with new punctuation and paragraphing.The Mandarin version of Flowers at Sea,translated by Eileen Chang,was released in the 1980 s and later transformed into a film by Hou Hsiao-hsien.Nearly a hundred years,The Biography of Flowers on the Sea is presented to readers in various forms.From the courtesan novel that Lu Xun named "plain and close to nature" to Hu Shi’s "the first masterpiece of Wu-language literature",the "Yadong Edition",which was punctuated and annotated in 1926,became an important breakthrough in the classicalization of The Biography of Flowers on the Sea.This version has also become the main text for later researchers to read and interpret.With the "Yadong edition" as the center,we can use the history of books,the history of printing,the history of communication theory to explain the modern publishing mechanism presented in the process of publishing and communication,and as a non-mainstream Wu-language literary work,it was concerned by the advocates of new culture and shaped into a classic with the deep cultural trend.At the same time,the research vision will be expanded to try to interpret the movement of "sorting out national cultural heritage" advocated by Hu Shi and others,and to rediscover and define the academic and intellectual history of folk literature.
