Since the Industrial Revolution, the economy and technology have continued to develop, and the quality of life has witnessed unceasing improvement. However,at the same time, greenhouse gas emissions caused by human activities keep increasing. Moreover,in recent years, frequent extreme climate events like Amazon forest fires, high temperatures in California, and the massive melting of glaciers all highlight the seriousness of global climate issues. As global warming becomes more serious and complex, exploration around the world of how to reduce the impact of greenhouse gases on the climate is also deepening. The translation material for this translation report is excerpted from chapter three, chapter six, chapter nine and chapter sixteen of the book Hacking Planet Earth: How Geoengineering Can Help Us Reimagine the Future. It tells that under the background of global warming, temperature rising and frequent extreme climate, some scientists and environmentalists believe that the current cooling method is hard to prevent the occurrence of climate disasters,so they hope to build some geoengineering projects with human innovation and advanced technology, rapidly cooling down the earth. The book is of strong practical significance since there are few relevant scientific popular readings in China. It is hoped that this translation practice will bring a deeper understanding of the severe impacts of global warming and provide reference and guidance for professionals studying environmental issues.Popular science readings possess characteristics of science, popularity and literariness.Under the guidance of relevance theory, this report analyzes in detail the difficulties in the translation of source texts in terms of vocabulary, sentence and discourse, aiming at exploring different problems at different stages of popular science translation. At the lexical level,it mainly discusses the translation of terminology in certain fields, abstract nouns and initialism. At the syntactical level, the difficulties are reflected in the translation of dashes in long sentences, the conversion of the passive voice and sentences that can be translated into Chinese four-character patterns. Finally the translation of the discourse is analyzed from three cohesive devices: reference, substitution and conjunction, and the corresponding translation methods include anaphora, reduction of the substituted words and the addition and abridgement of conjunctions.Through this translation practice,it is hoped that the translation experience will be enriched and the translation skills suitable for popular science texts will be summed up.
