English reading is of great importance in English learning.Extracurricular reading is an effective supplement to in-class reading.Suppose the teacher is correctly guided and supplemented by students’ favorite reading materials.In that case,it will realize the vision of integration of reading inside and outside the classroom to improve students’ reading ability and reading interest.This study will further explore the narrow reading strategy and its impact on the reading ability and reading interest of Grade 7 students in H School in Changzhou,Jiangsu Province.Based on the above questions,this study raises the following research questions:(1)How does narrow reading affect junior high school students’ attitude towards English extracurricular reading?(2)What is the impact of narrow reading on the English reading ability of junior high school students?Participants in the study were 90 first-year students from two classes in H school in Changzhou city.Participants were divided into Class 12 of the experimental group and the Class 18 of the control group,with an observed cycle of 4 months.The experimental and control groups underwent pre-test,post-test,and reading training.The practical class adopts the narrow reading method to carry out one extracurricular reading class every Thursday.In contrast,the control class adopts a more traditional reading teaching method.The reading test is carried out in the experimental and control classes before and after the experiment.The testing team also completed the trials of the reading attitude questionnaire before and after the investigation,and the teacher collected data in time and analyzed it.According to the post-test results,the reading ability was grouped into high,medium,and low levels at the end of the investigation,and two students were selected from each for semi-structured interviews.Since a series of relevant qualitative data were obtained,the data of the pre-test and post-test of the experiment were analyzed and compared by using the SPSS26.0.The results show that:(1)Narrow reading is conducive to improving the interest,cognition and self-confidence of junior high school students in English extracurricular reading.(2)Narrow reading can improve the English reading ability of junior high school students.Students have significantly improved their vocabulary memory and discourse comprehension.Based on the research findings,the researcher put forward some pedagogical suggestions.It is hopeful that this study may have reference significance for junior high school English teachers to integrate extracurricular reading and in-class reading. |
