| With the increasing frequency of international cultural exchanges, the implementation of globalization of Chinese culture has grown in importance. The C-E translation of Chinese novels provides foreign readers with a chance to understand Chinese literature and culture, also promotes the development of Chinese culture itself. As a representative of avant-garde writer,Yu Hua’s works are popular both in China and abroad, and Mistakes by the Riverside is one of his early short stories. This report summarizes the problems encountered in the translation of Mistakes by the Riverside from three aspects: lexicon, syntactic structure, and rhetorical devices,as well as specific translation difficulties such as onomatopoeia words,four-character phrases,run-on sentences,serial-verb sentences, simile, personification, and hyperbole devices.Functional equivalence theory is one of the basic translation theories of Eugene A.Nida, which emphasizes functional equivalence and reader’s response.Translating a novel also involves reproducing the content and artistic style of the work. Therefore, the translator should follow the requirements of the functional equivalence theory, faithfully convey the message of the source text, and try to reproduce the style of the source text.In this report, the author applies Nida’s functional equivalence theory to demonstrate translation methods and techniques to solve the above difficulties, including literal translation, free translation, conversion, transliteration, combination, division, amplification and conversion. It is hoped that the C-E translation of this novel will provide research material for the study of avant-garde works and provide references for other novel translations. |
