Grammar learning is a very important part of high school English learning and occupies a pivotal position.The flexible use of grammar rules will not only improve students’ interest in learning English,but also increase their English reading and comprehension skills.Thus,their English proficiency and students’ English performance will also be developed.However,many problems existed in grammar teaching and it is common to primarily focus on the teaching of grammar rules and pay less attention to the cultivation of students grammatical competence.The production-oriented approach(POA)was created by the Chinese Research Center for Foreign Language and Education at Beijing Foreign Studies University to overcome the drawback of “separation of learning and application” in foreign language teaching in China.This study is to apply the production-oriented approach to English grammar teaching in senior high school and investigate its effects on grammar teaching.This study mainly discusses the following three research questions:(1)What are the effects of the production-oriented approach on senior high school students’ grammatical competence?(2)What are the effects of the production-oriented approach on the use of grammar learning strategies of senior high school students?(3)What are the influences of the production-oriented approach on senior high school students’ grammar learning interests?In this study,forty students from a science class of Grade Two in a senior high school in Liaoning Province were selected for a 12-week action research.Tests,questionnaires,and interview are the main research instruments in the study.And the data collected from the experiment were analyzed by using SPSS 23.0.At first,the researcher conducted a pre-test and a questionnaire in order to understand the current situation of English grammar teaching in senior high school and intended to find the problems that students might face.Then,the researcher began to make a teaching plan based on the production-oriented approach and carried out the first-round action research.In the second-round action research,the researcher adjusted the teaching plan aiming to solve problems existing in the first-round action research.Then the researcher applied the production-oriented approach to the English grammar class again by improving the teaching plan.The research findings show that the implementation of the production-oriented approach did improve students’ grammatical competence and promote the use of grammar learning strategies,and it also created a strong interest in grammar learning. |
