The core of the Belt and Road Initiative is infrastructure and interconnection construction. As an important part of infrastructure construction, hydropower projects have always been the vanguard in China’s infrastructure construction at home and abroad. With the continuous advancement of the Belt and Road Initiative, international exchanges and cooperation in the field of hydropower engineering have been enhanced, the connection between countries has become closer, and the translation of hydropower engineering texts has become increasingly important. This report is a translation of Specification for Geological Observation of Hydropower Projects,in form from Chinese into English, with a total of about 23000 words,in which the author is responsible for the translation all of its content. It involves 8 kinds of hydropower projects geological observation, contents, methods and technical requirements such as fracture and seismicity observation, reservoir induced earthquake observation, and groundwater observation. This practical report is mainly used for observation work in geological survey of large and medium-sized hydropower projects(including pumped storage power stations)with characteristics of stro ng specialization, rigorous logic and high formality. To this end, this report adopts the theory of functional equivalence, especially the theory of “dynamic equivalence” concept. The author lists typical examples from three levels of vocabulary, syntax and discourse, summarizes and analyzes the problems and solutions encountered in the process of translation, and strives to achieve deep equivalence in the most appropriate, natural and equivalent language, rather than superficial “mechanical equivalence”.Under the guidance of the theory of functional equivalence, the author applies different methods to the translation of Specification for Geological Observation of Hydropower Projects, such as parts-of-speech transliteration, segmental translation and sequential translation. The results show that translation should pursue the highest level of equivalence, specifically, the functional equivalence of words, sentences and texts within the framework of stylistic features or culture of the source text. The transla tion practice proves that the theory of functional equivalence is practical and plays a systematic and normative guiding role in the translation of engineering texts.
